Pelissier left the lineup in mid-2004 and was replaced by drummer Bob Bryar, who had first met the band while running sound for the Used (with whom the band had toured several years earlier).
Although critical reactions were mixed, the record produced several radio singles and popular MTV videos, including "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," "Helena," and "The Ghost of You." The following year, they released Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, a platinum-selling album that featured cover art by Way himself. The album attracted a small underground following, and My Chemical Romance jumped to the big leagues in 2003 by signing with Reprise Records. Comparisons to Thursday were frequent both bands hailed from New Jersey, both had recorded for Eyeball, and both combined punk-pop's aggression with introspective, confessional lyrics. My Chemical Romance's debut, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, appeared in 2002 courtesy of New York's Eyeball Records. In 2022, they released their first song in eight years, the sprawling "Foundations of Decay." My Chemical Romance officially ceased operations in 2013 but reconvened in 2019 for a reunion show in Los Angeles and a short run of performances abroad. Two years later, they released the ambitious rock opera The Black Parade, which was certified triple platinum and included the hit singles "Welcome to the Black Parade," "Famous Last Words," and "Teenagers." The narrative-driven Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys appeared in 2010 and introduced '70s power pop, psych rock, and proto-punk elements to the group's sound. MCR’s opening act last night was Thursday, another heroic New Jersey emo band with plenty of MCR connections. MCR also did “I Never Told You What I Do For A Living,” the closer from their 2004 sophomore album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, and they hadn’t played that song live sing 2008. MCR played “Demolition Lovers” during their encore, and that wasn’t the only treat during last night’s show. They hadn’t done that one live since 2004. Gerard Way dressed up like some kind of bat, and the band played “Demolition Lovers,” the epic closing track from their 2002 debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. Last night, MCR played at the Prudential Center in their home state of New Jersey, and they made sure it was a grand homecoming. Frontman Gerard Way is still wearing a different costume for every set, and the band continues to bust out live rarities. My Chemical Romance’s triumphant reunion tour has been going for a while now, and the members of the band are doing everything in their power to make every night on the tour special.
